EESL executive chairman Saurabh Kumar resigns

State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) executive vice chairman Saurabh Kumar on Tuesday tendered his resignation citing personal reasons, sources said. Kumar confirmed the development but declined to comment.

EESL’s Kumar became the face of energy efficiency programmes in the country as he spearheaded the world’s largest non-subsidised distribution programme of LED lamps under the ‘Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for All’ (Ujala) scheme.

Through competitive bidding — based bulk purchase, EESL lowered the price of LED lamps — from Rs 310 per piece to Rs 40 per piece.

Kumar was elevated to the executive vice chairman rank in April this year from the position of managing director of the company.

The sources said Kumar has sought to be relieved from duty on September 30 and has applied for leave from tomorrow till month end.
