Trump adviser Milley took secret action to protect nuclear weapons, new book says

Former President Donald Trump’s top military adviser took top-secret action two days after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to limit Trump from potentially ordering a dangerous military strike or launching nuclear weapons, according to a forthcoming book. CNN cites the soon-to-be-published book “Peril” as saying ex-Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley was worried that Trump could “go rogue,” and called a secret meeting on Jan. 8 to review the process for military action. The Washington Post, citing the same book and meeting, writes that Milley told senior officers that the president alone could give a nuclear-launch order, but that he — Milley — had to be involved. The book is by the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward and Robert Costa. An earlier book by Post reporters also detailed Milley’s concerns about Trump, saying the military adviser thought the president might attempt a coup.
